The Journey Begins

A beginner’s guide mini makeover to becoming a Goth and embracing a Gothic Lifestyle.

I guess my Gothic journey began when I was a typical sullen teenager, I had never really fitted in, only had a few friends, and tended to keep to myself. I can’t really remember the exact moment I decided to go alternative but I do remember being obsessed with dressing in black. I never wore make up until I hit late teens but started instead with dying my hair wild colours, my first truly Gothic purchase was my Pentagram pendant bought from ebay which I still have and wear everyday.

So if you’re just starting out on your Gothic Journey I’d suggest a mini Goth makeover.
1) Gothic fashion. Black is basic, rather that spend loads of money on cloths right away, anything black will do for now
2) Gothic hairstyle. Again black hair is popular, maybe with some coloured highlights. But don’t be afraid to experiment with different looks, I’ve had every colour under the moon but finally settled on blonde with a touch of blue every now & then.
3) Gothic makeup. Girls and boys can wear it, black lipstick, black eyeliner, black nail polish. Are you seeing the theme yet? And last but not least
4) Gothic jewellery. Crosses are always good and my personal favourite Pentagrams.
In fact Gothic Jewellery is a great place to start, you don’t have to spend a lot to find something really cool & unusual.

Next all you have to do is pick a day, and dress like a goth. It doesn't have to be perfect, just do the best you can, modern society is so focused on appearances, and people will soon begin to treat you like a Goth. That’s pretty much how it happened for me the first time I heard someone call me a Goth I thought why didn’t I think of that! So form then on my obsession with living a Gothic lifestyle began.

Becoming a Goth is a process that demands a lot of dedication, and taking that first step can be a little intimidating. But remember that simply dressing in black doesn’t make you into a true Goth. Becoming a Goth on the inside is different, You are a true Goth when you feel like one, no matter what shows on the outside. Remember what brought you down this path and you can’t go wrong.

At the end of the day, you can always put your old clothes back on... but you may not want to. You could return to your regular life... but you will always desire for the subtle pleasures that you knew as a Goth. You’ll soon find that you slip into your Goth attire every chance you get, and that your former life seems so mundane and unexciting. You've taken that all important first step, and you're seeing the amazing benefits of converting to a Gothic lifestyle.

Living a Gothic Lifestyle

A beginner’s guide to becoming a Goth and embracing a Gothic Lifestyle.

I call myself Goth because it is the best description for who and what I stand for, however I feel that the Genre that is Gothic is so infinite that it more than capable of welcoming anyone who regards them self as a misfit in the mundane everyday life of mainstream culture. Giving them the freedom of portraying their distinctiveness and individuality.

When you look around Goth really has become a permanent fixture in mainstream culture, but there are a lot of misconceptions about the people who choose to embrace the lifestyle, which is fuelled by the endless stream of stereotyped images you see in film and TV.

I discovered this great little book "Gothic Charm School" is the ultimate, fully-illustrated handbook for day-to-day Gothic living and an 'insider's look' at the subculture for people who are curious about, but not necessarily part of the subculture. I agree that being a Black-Clad-Freak doesn’t have to mean being depressed and snarly. (Witty, sarcastic, and possibly a touch cynical, yes. Mean-spirited, sullen, and rude, no.) being Goth and being polite is much, much more subversive than just wearing black t-shirts with 'edgy' sayings on them.

The Gothic lifestyle is a way of life not just a way of dressing, We follow our own set of values and attitudes. A distinct culture, which includes architecture, literature, style, art and music. In Gothic fashion Black is the colour that most people associate with Goths. However, other dark colours like blood red, purple, dark green and blue are also popular. I myself love red and purple.
Gothic makeup is distinguished with a pale base and dark eye and lips, although black lipstick is a must for any self respecting Goth it is hard to pull off, I tend to apply blood red as a base and then accentuate my lips with a bold black liner. Gothic hairstyle, Many prefer their hair to be straight and pitch black. However, I am proud to be a Blonde Goth.

If you are a Goth already, or are looking for a way to express your true self, you already know that dressing up like a Goth doesn’t make you one. Being a Goth is more about the attitude that a person has. People choose this lifestyle because they feel detached from the mainstream culture. A Gothic lifestyle gives them a sense of independence, where they can, not only express their emotions and feelings, but also live life in a way that is quite often not acceptable in conventional society.

If you’re just starting out on your journey into the Gothic lifestyle you may want to subscribe to a Goth Magazine one of my favorites is Gothic Beauty. Follow the link below to their site.

You can also find a lot of back issues of Gothic Beauty and other great reads on ebay too.

Introducing the World to the Joys of Goth

Hi I'm Rozanna I have always been a Goth at heart, even before I knew what a Goth was! it's been a long bumpy ride and throughout my life I have drifted back and forth between “Normal” and Alternative with my style, until I finally settled on a Japanese Gothic Lolita look with a touch of Cyber and Punk thrown in for extra effect. So now that I'm comfortable in my own skin I thought it was time to share some of my thoughts and experiences, and maybe help someone else who is still trying to find out who they are.

It’s taken 30+ years to become the work in progress I am today & it’s been one hell of a ride so I thought it would be nice to share some of the weird and wonderful conclusions I’ve come up with so far.
